How do you run Windows programs on a MAC?

I've got a brand new MAC for school but a bunch of the programs I need to run are Windows-only. Is there any way to run them from my MAC computer or do I have to install windows on it somehow?

The cool thing about wine is it works for Linux too, so once you figure it out you're set to move over to a much better OS.
