  1. I am looking to back up and possibly actively mirror a folder across multiple computers in a network. I have a test folder that will work for testing, but the files in this folder will be edited and saved on multiple computers in the same day a small garage fire in the spring destroy most everything that was active so in the network will have computers in the garage, shop, and house, along with a network drive in the house. test files will be from the electric sheep program, and on 2 computers and a network drive another computer or network drive needs to be set up as a time machine backup in case a file gets accidentally deleted or saved wrongfully. "C:ProgramDataElectricSheepcontent" "\WDMYCLOUDSmartWareElectric Sheep" "\FRED-505ElectricSheepContent" A 4th location can be kept for a time machine backup of which I also do not know how to do. Windows 7/8 are my primary OS's
  2. I'm in the market for a good WIFI router/switch/repeater. Looking for something with at least 5 1Gig ports and the ability to repeat/extend the signal to another Access Point which is up stairs so i don't need to run wired Ethernet to the other side of the house. Looking online, This Western Digital N900 looks nice however it doesn't appear to have the repeater functionality. Anyone buy anything recently which is working out well? Or got a tip on something out there? Thnx

    Ethernet Over Power Lines

I am doing a research paper and I am trying to find out if this type of network can get congestion and if so how it can be mitigated.
  4. So I have a pretty standard laptop and I was wondering if it would be possible to remotely play games installed on my desktop or a virtual machine using the laptop. Say if I was in the other room and I wanted to play games, could I use the laptops remote desktop connection do this? And is it possible to install games on a virtual machine and then play them remotely? (Assuming the games were installed on a server or workstation) Wouldn't the video card in the virtual machine not matter as much and I could just make it use the video card in the laptop?
  5. I'm studying for school and trying to figure out what you call part of a website name. It's the part that normally has the www. in it. For example answers.groovypost.com - what is the answers. part called?
  6. I have a new laptop. I am connected to the Internet but windows 8 cannot locate the 2 printers on the network. I don!t know what to do.
  7. Question from Reader: I need help connecting to the internet. I can get connected if I plug Ethernet cord straight into the computer, but if I plug Ethernet cord into router my computer can see router, but can't connect to internet. My service provider can't get to me until Jan.11th. I will lose it before then. Can you please help me?
  8. When I try to login to my router at 192.168.1.1 it accepts my username and password but just displays the message " (192.168.1.2) is managing this device " with a blank white screen, nothing else is visible. Is there anyway to fix this? I can't access my router control panel because of this.
  9. I'm not too knowledgeable about networking and routers. Pretty much all I know is how to set up a router to create a wireless network, and that's all I've been using it for currently. I like playing games online (most notably League of Legends), and living with a big family on an 'ok' internet connection just won't cut it. For example, I'll start playing a game, and then someone else will start watching Netflix, making my game virtually unplayable. A friend mentioned about using router firmware to create a stable ping. He didn't really know much on the topic, but it sparked my curiosity. Is this even possible? And if so, will it have any negative effects to other users on the network. (Essentially, can I play my game on a playable ping without being an internet hog?) League of Legends Support led me to something about QoS, but as I read further into the article it seems it's about prioritizing bandwidth? (Again, I don't want to be an internet hog) Any insight into this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  10. So, my computer "see's" the university's network, but I can't connect through to the internet. I've tried all sorts of things: Restarting computer, Disabling/Re-enabling my Local Area Connection, Confirmed I have the correct MAC Address, etc. I've followed Microsoft's suggestions which included resetting the Local Area Connection and Resetting the IP Address, with no luck. Any other suggestions? Typically I wouldn't ask around the internet about this sort of question, but seeing that my university's IT services are off for this week (lame, inorite), I'd figure I'd give it a go. Operating System: Microsoft Vista PC: Inspirion Laptop Thanks in advance.
  11. My PC is not reachable on local LAN (workgroup) after changing computer name, i then renamed back to the original name, still not reachable. I tried to ping everybody and it is successful, but other can't ping me or access my shared folders. What do you suggest in that case? Thanks
  12. I use a windows 7 Home Premiun and I would create a virtual network using the microsoft loopback adapter. I already create this network but when I enable it I got an error message "unidentify network " my question is how to fix this problem ....help please....
  13. OK so here it goes:I have Virtual PC installed with two machines: 1 server 2008 , and one Vista.I set them up to have static IPs from on the same sub network(192.168.0.xxx), also I gave them the same domain (don't know how hat helps ..but i did it.If I ping each other they respond OK. Now what I need is for the serve 2008 Machine to provide to the vista client some services( just for test..nothing fancy):-i need to configure a domain( not sure if already did that-i need to configure active directory( to have 1 admin account , 1 user, 1 computer, 1 server)- i need to have a webhost on the server so that the client can go to iexplorer and access a simple web page- i need to have a ftp ( I installed FTP for win server 2008 but not sure I configured ok) with 1 file to be accessed from the client.- i need to have an exchange server with 2 mail accounts.- and last I need to be able to access the server remotely from the client. I am pretty sure some of the stuff is really easy( still I do not know how:D) and that some of the stuff is tricky .Thank you for your answers,Theo
