Your opinion on XBOX 360 vs PlayStation 3 vs Wii?

I'm thinking about getting a console, but it's insanely hard to pick between the three. Here's what I think of each:

XBOX 360: Has good exclusives, uses achievements which are also supported by PC (Games for Windows Live). I already have a LIVE account so it would be great if I wanted all of my games to be in one place. Obvious minus here is the risk of a RROD, and the trouble of having to pay for LIVE GOLD in order to play multiplayer.

PS3: Unbelievably awesome exclusives, yet fairly expensive games in general (due to Blu-Ray obviously). A good step forward since I already own a PS2, also has free multiplayer unlike the 360 and (IMO) the controllers are more durable and better designed. Downsides here - FAT models overheat, Slim models aren't that cheap (if I want to go for a big HDD).

Wii: Nothing to do with the PS3 or 360, a few good exclusives, unique control system and cheap too. Good for sports, but few play multiplayer on shooters and racers and most games get boring after being completed once. Some other drawbacks are the lack of achievements and the lack of true Full HD output (I know some third party cables claim they can do this, but all it is is a bunch of upscaling)...

So that's what I think of the three, all in all. Now I'm ready to hear YOUR opinion! Have something good to say about a console? Say it. Have something bad to say about a console? Say it. I'll average out the opinions and pick my console based on the replies.

We have all 3 and in our house the Wii is for little kids and Grandads. The XBOX and PS3 are for me, I have no preference over ether of them but I need both so that I can play all the exclusive games on each console.

I think it best to forget about the hardware and choose based on what games are available that you want to play.

I agree with Abby, it depends on what games you want to use.

Just a thought but it seems fairly certain that the new XBOX and PS4 will be released next year, so if you have used the PS2 for this long then why not wait until then.

It would be a shame if some killer games came out that the old consoles where not fast enough to run.

You could also get a big discount on an XBOX 360 or PS3 once the new ones come out if thats what you wanted.

Sounds like a good idea, might cosider that too. If the new PS4/360 have backwards compatibility I'm definetely going for them, but if not, PS3/360 it is.

Hey Abby - great news. I found a cheap second hand PS3 bundled with a bunch of exclusives I'd love to play like LBP and GT5. Thanks for the advice - I'll probably buy the console any time around this week and I'm sure buying it for the exclusives is a great deal. :)

Build a gaming PC. It's a little bit more expensive, but it's worth it.

Here's what you buy:

$450 - Motherboard and CPU combo. I7-2600K (k edition) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.989278
$330 - Radeon 7950 Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127667
$50 - Case. Can also re-use an old one to save money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042
$114 - 16GB of DDR3 Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231568
$90 - 750watt power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139021
$105 - 120GB Solid State Harddrive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227706

Total = $1,139 - If you wait until Black Friday a lot of these components will be on sale. MAYBE that will shave the price down to the $800 area.Still need a monitor/keyboard/mouse/ and maybe a gamepad, but then you're set. Most of the console games you want can be run on emulators as well.

He wasnt asking about a gaming pc and hes already accepted an answer on this. Xbox360 or PS3 is by far better than a PC when it comes to playing games. Why spend $1,139 dollars plus a keyboard/monitor/mouse and gamepad when you could have both consoles for less. Then all the games will work properly just put them in and go.

Hey bananajoe,

I already have a PC, it may not be that well-fit for gaming but it still plays the games I want it to...

Here are my specs:

RAM: 4GB RAM DDR2

CPU: Core 2 Quad @ 2.3 GHz

GPU: Radeon HD 6970 2 GB VRAM

MOUSE: Razer Lachesis Gaming Mouse (4000 DPI Edition/Blue)

MONITOR: Samsung SyncMaster BX2235 (LED Backlit/Full HD/2 MS Response Time)

I also have a few other gaming peripherals as well as a second monitor, but what matters is I'm not really planning on getting a new gaming PC anytime soon.

This was originally a comment on BananaJoe's answer but it became too long and had to be converted to an answer.

I have to both agree and disagree with ComputerExpert on this. It is not "better" generally speaking. It depends on the user.

A gaming PC can upgraded and has far more titles available, better graphics, and support for more gamepads. It also isn't locked into a particular OS and can be used to do a lot more than just gaming. I do believe the ultimate gaming experience can be had on a properly rigged PC.

Then again on the other hand a gaming PC is really expensive. And if you are a child or non-proficient with technology you may not even be able to figure out how to use it properly. In that case, the simple solution would be to go for a console.

But I wouldn't recommend buying a console right now. Microsoft is already on its way to releasing the next generation Xbox 720 and Nintendo is going after the next Wii. I can't imagine Sony's PS4 is far behind. I know prices on current consoles have dropped, but they will drop even more upon the release of the next gen. Or at that point if money is an issue you can just pick up the new one.

TL;DR - If money and time aren't an issue. Get a gaming PC. If you need something simple and cheap that works out of the box, get a console.
