Yes they will follow but if your site is crap and your SEO is crap then ppl cant find you in the first place so you will get no backlinks. Today, the robots are looking for articles that are informative and over 1,000 words long. This coupled with Panda and Penguin updates ahead of that effectively killed article directories. Make sure that every word on your website is unique because there are huge penalties for duplicate content. In addition, make sure that the content is useful to the reader. The more specifics you can provide the better. Try to create a phrase that real users would enter into a search engine and use it exactly that way in three places within the article. Just write great content, keep it updated (if it's evergreen) and remain active in your niche. Traffic will come natural. If you screw around with blackhat SEO, you will get burned. You can also blog on other sites or setup a forum or participate on other forums etc.... Mainly, just be active in your "niche" and write and yes, traffic will come.
