Windows 7 issues during startup

Recommended Posts

Hello, I turn on my computer (windows 7 64bit)and everything loads up fine. I click on a icon, cursor goes around and then nothing.

Restarting the PC and sometimes it works OK. Other times turn off completely w/full reboot, turn on and sometimes I'm OK. Sometimes it takes usually 2-3 times however today I was OK the after the first restart.

I feel a reintall coming on unless anyone can help??

Dave

Hi @Dave - the first thing I would do is examine all your startup apps that are loading during startup. You could have a simple issue with a virus (well not simple but understandable) or you could have an app that is hanging up during the reboot process.

Type in MSConfig after you reboot and then Click the Startup Tab. Go through the list there and disable all the crapware that doesn't need to be there. If you have a question about something in there, just drop a comment here below my answer and I can help ya.

You should also make sure you have the latest AV installed. Read this: http://www.groovypost.com/howto/news/microsoft-security-essentials-2-0-the-only-windows-antivirus-you-need/ and install it. It's a free AV package from Microsoft that is very good.

Hope this helps!

Hey Mr Groove! Love the site and really enjoyed your last article!

I have an idea for a new article on groovypost for you! You need to write something on all the different search syntax that can be used in outlook 2007!

I only use a few of the features but would love to get the inside scoop.

Hello! I recently tried to follow the instructions in the article 'how to disable startup programs in windows...'. The process seemed to work until after the re-start when I got a serious looking message that basically told me to reinstate everything to a previous date point to avoid damaging the computer. Well I did that because I'm insecure about the inner mysteries of the computer, but would still like to get rid of automatic start-up of my photo programs and other things. So what is really necessary in the start-up and how do I bypass the rather demanding order to re-instate everything after I've unticked the things I think are not needed? Thank you all in advance for your help. My operating system is Windows XP.

Most of the time when you install an application, the application likes to automatically start when Windows boots. It does this by adding itself to a registry key.
Here are a few of the startup registry keys:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesHKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunHKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
Usually the program can be found in one of those keys, but sometimes instead it will add itself to the startup folders:
      %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup%C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup%
I've tried locking down these locations by adjusting who can edit these, but that makes it really hard to add applications to them that you actually DO want running at Startup. Does anyone have an easier way of blocking applications from adding themselves to Startup in Windows, while at the same time allowing you to add the ones that you like to startup.

Perhaps if we could just block installers from adding to startup that would be best.

How do you create an MS WORD TEMPLATE to create a flyer (8.5 X 11) with pull tag telephone numbers; also the ability to insert a scanned graphic?
