What is process svchost.exe

I was trying to clean up my computer and I found I have a dozen "svchost.exe" processes running in my Task Manager.

 

What is svchost.exe? Is it' a virus or something good? Should I do an adaware scan?

Several svchost.exe is ok. It is a vital windows process. Don't delete it. Although some malware camouflage themselves as svchost.exe. Here you could read more info. Link
