I've been talking about keeping your PC OS and 3rd party software updated for years. While you can manually check for updates, you might want to enable a switch to get updates more quickly.
I enjoy getting Windows updates as fast as possible on my machine. These are non-security updates; they're like new features and UI improvements. Microsoft rolls out updates to users periodically (usually every month), but you can get the sooner using the following guide.
If you want to update your Windows 11 system as soon as updates are available, you can toggle a switch in Settings. Use this simple step-by-step guide to enable it.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings on Windows 11.
- Once Settings is open, click Windows Update in the lower right corner of the Settings screen.
- Under the More options section, toggle on the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available switch.
Note that this is the section under the Check for updates button, which you can click to see if any updates are available right now. You will receive non-security updates as soon as possible on your Windows 11 PC sooner than other users.
Check for other Microsoft Product Updates
It’s also possible to grab updates for other Microsoft products sooner on your PC.
- While the Windows Update section is open, scroll down and click Advanced Options.
- Toggle on the Receive updates for other Microsoft products, switch, and close out of Settings.
Keeping your PC updated is critical. Not only will you get the latest security updates, getting new feature updates is great also. If new features are what you're after (and you're a little brave,) consider joining the Windows Insider Program. There are different tiers so that you can get beta versions of Windows before everyone else.
However, ensure that you only do this if you run them on a secondary PC or in a VM. You don’t want beta versions of the OS running on your primary production system because they contain several bugs and other problems. However, if you are an enthusiast, have at it.
I turn on both features whenever I set up my own personal PCs with Windows 11 at home. Like most Windows updates on your PC in the workplace, your IT department will take care of your settings.
