  1. Welcome!! Question MrGroove - What is the purpose for the groovyPost.com Forum? Answer Ever since I started groovyPost.com, I've usually get 5-10 emails a day from readers with Simple -> Complex computer questions. Because I get so many I'm not always able to respond as fast as I would like. Additionally, many of the questions are different versions of the same question. So, with this in mind I've decided to add a Community Technical Support Forum to groovyPost.com. Over the next few months I'll be trying to direct people to ask their questions HERE rather than in email. So, if you see a question you can answer, help me out and give it your best shot it helping. Or, if you have a question PLEASE feel free to ask it here. Both myself as well as regular readers will do our best to answer your questions as quickly as possible! I would also like to take this time to invite all our Readers to help contribute to the content of the site by posting your own experiences, tips, tricks, new code etc.. Thanks Again, -MrGroove

  2. I'd love to move from Mac OS X to Ubuntu, but two things are stopping me - music and photos. I have hundreds of iTunes Playlists that I've made over many years - for kids, parents friends etc, and don't want to lose any of them. So I need to be able to migrate all my iTunes library, including all playlists into a music player on Ubuntu. Secondly, I have thousands of photos, grouped int albums. These also need to be moved across, with the albums intact. Can anyone help?

  3. I am using Windows 10 Lenovo Laptop computer. I have found a whole load of files on my Hard Drive (pic 1) that i thought was deleted a long time ago, when i deleted the software. They, or it ( Legacy Games), are not listed on my installed program list, so i cannot delete them that way. I use Ccleaner (basic free edition), to patch up my pc, and to clear the registry of unwanted items, but after 5 months, the Legacy Game folders are still present. I even went to the Hard Drive (C), and clicked on "Program Files", and "Program Files x86" to what was listed, and still nothing showed that Legacy was on my computer. I have to inform you at this point, that i am not computer minded, and it was because i had a problem before, searched for the answer, and Groovypost provided me with what i needed. Any help given would have to include a step by step detail of what i have to do to clear these folders. Also, on the same note, but different program, there is also a folder on my desktop which will not delete, even by Ccleaner or any other method. Again, this item is not listed anywhere as being installed, nor can i find it. Pic 2 shows what is happening when i am trying to simply "delete" the "Legacy" folders. If anyone can help, i would be very grateful/ Thank you.

Today it was in : https://www.groovypost.com/howto/use-filters-in-microsoft-excel-to-find-data-faster/#respond I tried in both FireFox 84.0.2 and Edge. When I click on the comments button, nothing happens. No comments are displayed, on the #respond is added to the link.

  7. I found this MS documentation for Scripts. Currently it only appears to be for Excel online ... Office Scripts documentation - Office Scripts | Microsoft Docs But you should be able to play with it there. That being said, when I tried to find it, I did not see the "Automate" tab them mention ... <sigh>

  12. I asked this question several months ago and tried several of the suggestions, but I still cannot enter the Bios. I have a custom built computer using a MSI motherboard (990FXA-GD80 with 24-GB mem running the latest version of Win-10 / 64). When tapping "delete" upon startup the message "Entering Setup" appears. The screen turns gray and that's it. Nothing happens. Unfortunately I have misplaced the MSI installation disk.

  13. Steve: i contacted MSI and after trying some diagnostic tests it was determined that the MB needed to be replaced. Thanks for the follow up.

  14. Hello everyone, My member name is Mobear410 and my real name is Thom Dickey. My website is currently under construction or I would provide it here. I am 63 years old and I have been using computers since D.O.S. 3.0 was released prior to windows 1.0 and the internet. I was a sysop, remote sysop and co sysop on a few BBS systems in the San Diego County. I currently live in Oregon about 75 miles from the California border in the Rogue Valley. I am so attached to the internet these days that I think of myself as a internet junkie. I just can't get enough of the internet. Should we ever have a EMP go off in the country shutting down our computers and internet I will be lost I am so addicted to my computers and internet. It is just a matter of time though. I look forward to meeting others on this forum before it happens. I do a lot of surfing as long as my hands allows me to do so. I have severe pinched nerves in my left arm that sometimes keeps me from using the computer in a way that I can type clearly and easily. I'm also a software junkie. I spend a great deal of time downloading then testing the software & putting it to use if it turns out to be worthwhile. I am a disabled Vietnam vet and I guess that is all I am going to rattle to you for today. Hope your surfing brings you a great deal of joy. Later on, Mobear410

  22. I have the hard drive of my Toshiba laptop equally divided into C: and D: Drive C contains all the progs and data. Drive D was used for Backup. But when I created a recovery disk for drive C it asked if I wanted to retain the original backup. I opted for deleting, and it cleaned my Drive D. Now it has no contents with nearly 230 GB space. Could I expand the Drive C taking a part of the space of Drive D? I look forward to a solution that would not affect any existing contents. Theo

  23. I beg your pardon, but what exactly are you asking here? If an Outlook user says "Unicode", it means either she/he is talking about the PST file format or the Unicode characters. Are you telling this, "I can't see some of the characters since they are Unicode"? Or this, "the emails are stored in a Unicode PST file"? Look dear, Outlook 2003 and later versions including the latest 2016, use Unicode file format. If you were previously using Outlook 2013, it makes no difference since both support Unicode format. Your question is DAMN confusing. Help us please, so that we help you. Thanks.

  27. If you don't want to compact PST files, you can try one thing. You can transfer mailbox content from one PST file into new multiple PST files. There's no need to use any 3rd party tool for this. All you need to use is Outlook client. It has few built-in features which you can use here, such as: Archive, Import & Export, Move to Folders. Also, you can use Drag & Drop feature of Outlook client. Hope the shared information would be helpful here. Thanks and best regards.

  28. To get that classic F8 behavior back we need to restore the legacy boot menu policy. To do this, hit the Win + X keyboard combination and launch and elevated command prompt. When the command prompt opens, run the following: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy That’s really all there is to it. Now, when your computer boots up, you can mash the F8 key to view the classic Advanced Boot Options. If you want to return the boot menu back to normal, you can use this command: bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard

  30. Can’t see this in Photoshop but in Fireworks under File > HTML Setup > Table Tab, there are options for “Nested tables, no spacers” and “Single table, no spacers”. Not used them myself but it sounds like what you need.

  31. You can try "Move to folders" feature of MS Outlook 2003 to split PST file into multiple parts. This may take a lot of time and technical understanding. Follow the steps given below: 1. Launch MS Outlook. 2. Click File tab > New > Outlook Data File. 3. A dialog box “New Outlook Data File” will appear. Select Office Outlook Personal Folder File (.pst) and click OK. 4. A new dialog box “Create Microsoft Personal Folders” will pop up. Type a display name for this new PST file. 5. Now select the folder that you want to move to the new PST file. You may move one or more items to new PST file. 6. On the Edit menu, click Move to Folder. 7. A new dialog box “Move Items” will appear. Click New. 8. Again a new dialog box “Create New Folder” will appear. Enter a new name for this new folder in the Name box. 9. Click the new PST file under the “Select where to place the folder” option. Then click OK. 10. In the “Move Items” dialog box, make sure that the new folder in the new PST file is selected. Click OK. You can also try a third-party tool. I can recommend SysInfoTools PST Split tool here to split PST files into multiple parts. It will safely split a large sized PST file (ANSI and Unicode) without causing any changes to the original files. Thanks.

  32. Why not just open them up and split them up? They are database files so you will have a hard time trying to split them up using any type of automated process (FYI).

  33. Ok I only have the full version but I am sure this works in elements. Open the template file and the image in elements. Click on the image and press ctrl + a to select it then ctrl + c to copy it. Click on the template and press ctrl + v to copy the image onto the template. The copied image will be added as a new layer on the template. When you look in the layers panel you will see the template now has 2 layers. The template will be labeled as background and the image as layer 1. You can then select the image layer 1 and modify it as required.

  34. It's possible the wireless network adapter in the Chromebook is underpowered. Which model do you have? I'd suggest picking up a booster or a more powerful USB dongle like one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wifi+booster+usb

  36. For these buttons to work it requires Sony's proprietary software. Luckily, the packages required t operate the Brightness buttons isn't bloated like their Vaio Care crapware. To set it up, visit http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DRIVER and type in your model number. On a Vaio this should be found below the bottom-right corner of the screen. Once on the model's support page, download the following: SYSTEM COMPONENTS Sony® Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver Sony® Shared Library NOTEBOOK CONTROL AND UTILTIESSony® Notebook Utilities Note that this should include two other services within it, the Event Manager and Setting Utility Series. Be sure to also install any updates available for those services.. Now once you finish installing all of those your brightness keys should work. You might run into an error window that tells you "the installed battery may not be properly connected." This isn't an error to be worrieed about, it's just a false alarm. To disable it browse to C:/Program Files (x86)/Sony/ and delete the ISB Utility folder.

  37. Here's the real deal. There is a device detection issue with the 2730h build in which the application thinks the device is an NDIS ("LAN") device. With the build and firmware previous to 2730h, the device was indeed in "LAN" mode so there were no issues connecting. Since you upgraded the device to WinMB, the build sometimes thinks the device is in "LAN" mode (ROOT CAUSE) so it uses a certain set of functions to establish the connection. Obviously, these commands are incorrect so you reach said errors. As a quick workaround, you can either re-run the application or hit the "Detect Device" button. At these points, the application correctly identifies the device as a WinMB device and uses the correct set of functions to establish the connection. A more permanant solution is to actually set the device to back to LAN mode. Once in LAN mode, the application does not confuse the device mode and all your problems go away. In order to set it to LAN mode, use the link that had previously provided. Again, there is a bug in the software but it has already been addressed in the next release. Link to set device to LAN mode.http://www.vzam.net/uploadedFiles/UML290%20VPN%20Connection%20Issues%20-%20Read%20Me.zip

  39. Not sure I understand 100% your question. When you delete an email in Outlook, it will be moved to your deleted items folder. When you delete it from the deleted items folder, it will remain for 15-30 days if you're connected to a corporate email server how that setting is set by the system administrator. If you're using Outlook at home and NOT connected to Microsoft exchange, your email is usually stored in a PST file and you can recover the emails however it's not easy. Here is a guide for corrupting a PST file and recovering the email using SCANPST - http://www.groovypost.com/forum/microsoft-office/how-to-corupt-an-outlook-pst-file-to-recover-delete-email-t95682.html Hope that helps.

  40. On the Facebook page you want to delete: go to your account settings (under the arrow in the upper right corner next to HOME) On the upper left corner, click on the SECURITY tab. On the very bottom of the page, click on "Deactivate Your Account" Facebook will permanently delete the account after 30 days.

  41. To delete your Page or Place: Click Edit Page in the upper-right corner of your Page Select Manage Permissions from the left sidebar Click Delete [Your Page Name] Alternatively you can unpublish your page and make it instantly hidden from public view. Another fast way to have your Facebook page deleted is to publicly upload content that violates Facebooks Terms of Service (ToS).

  42. Quick question for you groovy excel ppl out there. I'm working with a vendor and need to calculate the discount and/or increase. I know there is a simple excel formula I can use. Just looking for a tip for it. Thanks!

  44. Here are the formulas I use in Excel: Percent Increase =sum(NEW-OLD)/OLD Percent Decrease or Discount =sum(OLD-NEW)/OLD Example: Let's say I bought a stock for $50 and now I'm going to sell it for $125. What is the % Increase of the stock sale? In Excel I would enter =sum(125-50)/50 and it would give me 150% increase. For a full explanation along with screenshots, take a look at this how to tutorial: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/calculate-percentage-increases-or-decreases-in-excel/

  46. Free text services and apps typically use a 5 digit common-short-code (CSC). These CSC are expensive short numbers used primarily by large businesses, licenses range from $500-$1500 per month so an individual will almost never ever have one of these. By default, most wireless carries accept incoming texts and phone calls from them. If someone is texting you from such a number, there is no way to tell who it is. But, you still have a few options. You can lookup the shortcode provider and make a complaint directly to them, in which case their account might be deleted and in the best case your number will be blocked from their users. You can reply STOP to the number that is texting you and the service provider is likely to block people from sending messages to your number. Call your own wireless provider and ask them to block all the number. Some are able to block individual CSC numbers, but others might have to block ALL CSC at once. For more information on CSC see the U.S. official CSC administraiton page.

  47. OK. This is how it's done.(I'm using Word 2007, but it makes no difference what version) Select page paper size and format the margins to use the minimum. Using the Insert Text box, make a text box with your phone number or text as you prefer. Size the box in a vertical position. Right click the box and choose Format Text Box. Go to Layout tab and high light In Front Of Text, select Advance De-select Move object with text. Choose Line - dashed Move the box to bottom left corner of page (be sure to stay with-in the margins). Select box and right click to copy. Paste. Do this as many times as necessary to fill bottom of page. Move each box so the vertical lines superimpose on one edge and the tops are even in a straight line. Then using the shift key high light each box and right click and group as one. In the upper section of the page you can add any text or insert pics or graphics as you please. Just be sure to Go to Layout tab and high light In Front Of Text, select Advance De-select Move object with text. Save as a template. Print the document and cut the vertical tabs at the bottom and maybe score the top to make easier ripping.

  48. i'm a pretty groovy chap and i really have NO idea where to start looking for this.... That being said, everything about outlook is a database (the .pst and the .ost) so i would guess nothing really ever gets deleted, it just gets removed until you compress your .pst file using the tools interface. perhaps that tool called scanpst -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497 can fix you up? No idea if it can repair the pst and bring back the Outlook DL's but it's worth a try. groovy dude? u see this?

  49. Thanks for your reply to my email message. The problem I had was that my registry string ended with: "c:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.outlook However, there was no name for the Outlooksecuretempfolder file shown and also no evidence of any folder called "Content.outlook" under \Temporary Internet Files\ !! Here's how I found the files after some added research: First, knowing your version of windows, select from the below address strings: Windows XP C:\documents and settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook Windows Vista C:\Users\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook Copy/paste the appropriate string into your “Start” -> “Run” command in XP or Vista, click OK and you will see your missing folder! (to add the “run” command to your Vista Start bar, right-click on Start button -> properties -> customize -> scroll down and select “Run command” -> OK) Once you find the very hidden Outlook secure temp folder (and your missing files) copy the complete folder’s string address from the address bar and make a desktop shortcut to the Outlook secure temp folder. Now go to your desktop, right-click your mouse, select -> New -> Shortcut -> paste in the folder address -> name the folder -> click OK You now have a shortcut on your desktop to your hidden outlook email attachment files !!! As postscript to this info, if you go to your registry key : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security In the right hand view pane should be an entry called "OutlookSecureTempFolder" IF... you double-click that entry to open edit mode, you will find your outlook temp folder's address string, which can be copied and pasted into your address bar.
